- Fatwa issued by Sharia court (Dar-ul-Qazas) donot have legal sanctity - violates FR of an individual - SC Bench; The Centre said the "freedom guaranteed by Article 26 to every religious denomination or every section thereof to establish and maintain institutions for religious and charitable purposes and to manage its own affairs in matters of religion would include the freedom to establish Dar-ul-Qaza/Nizam-e-Qaza to settle disputes between two persons professing Islam, according to the Shariat." These courts were not a parallel judicial system. Further the Dar-ul-Qaza/Nizam-e-Qaza did not prevent Muslims from reporting matters to the judicial machinery set up under the law of the land. - Bihar is the fastest growing State while Tamil Nadu is the worst performer, the latest data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has revealed. The second-best performing State is Madhya Pradesh, which grew at 9.89 per cent. Delhi is third with a growth rate of 9.33 per cent. - Union Tribal Welfare Minister Jual Oram launched the Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana (VKY), aimed at improving the infrastructure and human development indices of the tribal population. the government had granted approval in principle to recognise Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan as a centre of excellence in the field of tribal language and literature. A proposal to set up a national research centre in the Tribal Research Institute, Bhubaneshwar, to promote studies on the socio-economic development and culture of the tribal people had also been approved. The Ministry would take steps to strengthen the existing institutions for delivery of services to tribal people.
